Virtualization is not an end in itself. It is intended to make servers easier to operate, more secure and comprehensibly expandable. Proxmox VE is an established open source platform that brings together virtual machines and containers in one interface.

Why virtualization makes sense in the company

Many environments grow historically: one server for specialist applications, another for files, additional systems for monitoring or testing purposes. Virtualization does not automatically reduce all complexity, but it creates a clearer technical basis. Resources, backups and restores can be planned more precisely.

Where Proxmox fits well

Proxmox is suitable for local servers, dedicated systems in a data center and hybrid models. Virtual machines can accommodate classic Windows or Linux servers, while containers can efficiently provide smaller services. Not only CPU and memory are crucial, but also network, storage, Backup and the desired operational responsibility.

What is important in planning

• Availability: A single host is not a high availability cluster. The target model must match the actual needs.
• Backup: Backups need separate storage and regularly tested return paths.
• Documentation: Hosts, networks, dependencies and restarts should remain traceable.
• Lifecycle: Updates, hardware renewal and capacity reserves are taken into account right from the start.

Open Source and existing systems

Proxmox does not have to be pitted against Microsoft, cloud or proprietary products. It is an additional building block. Depending on the project, a Proxmox environment can support internal servers while collaboration runs via Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Likewise can they be part of a completely local environment.
